Nice one! I really like those types of ddo's for the 1949-s. I have been lucky to find three of these types over the past year, but I know I missed a lot of them early on. I love the DDO/RPM version the best. Keep up the good work!

Well, it's a good thing that I've saved my wheats from the start because I would throw this one back every time. Don't see it now either.

The 1949 four digit over the 1948 four digit. These three doubled dies are very interesting and there are many theories on why and how they came into being.

The simplest and most logical theory is that the mint ran out of working hubs for that year. So, three working dies that had been initially hubbed with 1949 working hubs, were hubbed again with 1948 working hubs, minus the 8 digit which had been abraded off the working 1948 hub. The last of the working dies to receive the mintmark were the S punch for San Francisco.

Did not know they existed. Also a good thing I save my wheats.

So, what gives this away is the blunted four over the pointed?

That is the main pick up point I look for on these. I dismissed a lot of these as MD early on but once you really study one, it will definitely stand out. Many have slight doubling along the right side of the tail of the first 9 and the 1 as well.

Thanks for the great synopsis of how these came to be made BJ!
