Hi all,

I got a bunch of wheat cents as a holiday gift, and they arrived just this morning. I was pulling out a few specific dates to look at, mainly late 50s Denver cents for RPMs, and a few 1941s just in case I got l got lucky. As soon as I saw the date, I noticed the notching on the 4, and quickly scanned the rest of the coin before doing a happy dance. I love this variety, and since I sold an example traded to me from Will, I had been wanting one. Now the search is over! :occasion16:

As a side note, there seems to be a little crud on some of the devices. I have goo-gone in the house, would that help remove the gunk on the coin? And if so, how do I apply it?
Thanks,

Simon

Congratulations Simon! Not sure about that product on a coin--I have never applied it to one.

AWESOME FIND! I will provide the goo-gone help, as I have used it before. I just fill a small shot glass part way with it, and let it soak for 12 - 24 hours. Depending on what kind of gunk, it may or may not dispear. Seriously, It took bad verdigris almost all off of a copper 63 in just 1 1/2 days, and (some) rust off a steel cent for me... and the surfaces underneath look original. It works great IMO. If this does not work, soak it for another 1-2 hours and GENTLY use a thorn (no, they do not scratch the coin if you use the soft kind, I learned this on CONECA) to GENTLY loosen and remove the crud. And, wa-la... nice coin!!!!:)

Thanks for the help, Alex. I will let it soak for a little bit and will post the results if it removes the gunk well.

Great find Simon! I am still waiting to find that one.

Clean-up options that have worked for me include a soak in mineral oil for 48 hours, followed by several acetone rinses and finally a distilled water rinse. Try it out on some other problem coins first so you learn what to expect on a "real" coin.

*scoldy voice* "...and just what are you doing with a shot glass, young man!" :sign10:

Simon, that is awesome! Glad you found a replacement for the one you traded. Looks to be in comparable or maybe even better condition. Now, you need to pull an 002 out of there!

I guess I'm about the last person to say CONGRATS SIMON. Great find.
For me..distilled water to acetone to xylene over a 24-48 hr period. Top it off with a light rub of verdi-care with a microfiber towel. If needed, a whittled toothpick gently used to get into the crevices (be careful...it will scratch the coin)
