Hi all.

Made my way past 4,000 posts today, and thought I would make a contest for you guys.

You can win the contest one of 3 ways.

1: Write a short poem about Lincoln Cents (or collecting in general).

2: tell your funniest story that has to do with collecting.

3: Write a proverb about Lincoln Cents that would appeal to me, as my favorite one will be put in my signature.

There are 3 prizes, and there will be 1 winner per category. Prizes will be distributed randomly, and are as follows:

-1963 proof Lincoln Cent
-1959D-1DO-003 (AU coin)
-2009P-1DC-002 (seen here http://www.maddieclashes.com/ADC-1c-2009_PL_-02.html). Coin is uncirculated.

Contest ends Sunday night!

On a more serious note, thank you to the LCR for helping me get to where I am now. I can hardly believe how immersed I have become in this fine hobby. There really is no comparison when it comes to this forum.
Thank you everyone and good luck to all!

Simon

Congrats on the 4,000 Simon!

Story:

Having found a 1972 Lincoln cent showing a slight misalignment on the obverse die, I took it to the local coin shop to inquire. I was around 10 years old at the time. The coin showed the typical proto-rim and then rim gutter, making the edge seem doubled. Not strong enough to even be considered an error.

"What do you think? I have been looking for that double date '72, and I found this?"
"I see. Well, it's like the big double date, but just rather minor. When the coin gets stamped twice you can really see it. You'll know when you find it. This coin was just stamped twice at the edge."

:sign10: At at the tender age of 10 you learned you needed to educate yourself and never trust your local coin shop. :sign10: Didn't I write a haiku already a while back? I'll have to look. Are we allowed to enter more than one category?

Ok, here is my entry for the short poem section:

Lincoln's head turned all green,
on a key date I wished not to clean,
I made him wash his hair,
in a tub filled with VERDI-CARE,
Now his head is all clean :)

Congrats Simon, they were 4,000 well educated, kind, helpful posts!

Hey Simon, can we enter each part of the contest once, or just pick one category and enter it?

Alex, I would prefer it if people only entered in one.
Good luck to all, I am really liking the submissions so far!

So, my wife comes storming over to me the other day and says, "*&!@#$&$%$*!!, Will, this hoard of pennies in the basement is getting out of control!!!"
I look at her helplessly and shrug and say, "Sorry, Honey, doctor's orders."
She pauses, confused, then explodes."What are Earth are you talking about!!"
"Well, the doctor gave me strict orders to increase my intake of zinc."

After getting "the stare" for a few seconds, I added, "Don't worry, Honey, I submitted a claim form with your insurance."

My wife has no sense of humor.

Will, I've got a feeling that you're going to be the first person ever to unwittingly test a roll of zincolns as a suppository.

A whole roll? Can I at least take them one at a time?

This reminds me of a funny exchange I had with my urologist, but you should probably PM me for that one. Sorry, Simon, for the residual clutter, but it's a party, right?

Hello, I don´t want to win here, but after 4000 this anniversary I would write in my signature that:

Warning! Lincoln Cents collecting can be addictive! , (but happy) :tinysmile_twink_t:

I know, my english isn't the best, but you understand what I mean :DD

So and now a further contribution for Simon, I hope you can understand at least something. Enjoy ;)

Poem about Cent Storage: (german version xD)

Oh Lincoln Cent:

Ein Cent zu haben erfreut mich im nu,
doch weiß ich nicht wohin ich dich bloß tu.

Auf den Tisch legen kann ich dich nicht,
da bekommst du mir ja doch zuviel Licht.

Gefunden! Die Lösung nennt sich Pappe,
egal wie viel ich dafür berappe.

Ich bastel mir die Münzkoffer selber,
ganz allein für meine schönen Gelder.

Cent,du bereicherst mein Leben so sehr,
niemals gebe ich dich je wieder her.

Oh Lincoln Cent...

But i think a funny story about collecting I don´t have.

Nevertheless, Best Regard from Erdnussbier :sign10:

My entry is a poem I wrote based on a true story, from the book (A Guide Book of LINCOLN CENTS)

A "brillant" misfortune

His name was J.Sanford Sultus
A wealthy numismatist was his known status

He sat in his motel room on June 20 th 1922
with some purchased coins he was eager to review

He quickly discovered their un pleasing tone
But the hasty numismatist should have just left them alone

His cleaning solution was potassium cyanide
with a glass of ginger ale by its side
but the collector was pretty ambitious
and to the danger he was oblivious

The thirsty ignoramus mixed up the two
and dropped to the floor without further ado

The liquid was not the intended thirst quencher
and the coroner ruled "death by misadventure"

Here I sit all broken hearted,
try to pick but only....

No, um, uh...

There once was a man from Nantucket,
who put all his pennies in a bucket....

Hmmm...

Roses are red,
some coins are blue.

Geez, I'm just not a poet.

It's really great having you around Simon, you've grown and matured a great deal. You're well on your way. Congratulations and thank you!

I can see why Batman chose fighting crime and was never a poetry major...:LOL_Hair:

I remember first joining the forum about 2 and a half years ago, I think the first thing I ever posted was a BIE cent. I am amazed by how much I have personally grown and become involved with the hobby...I went from a clueless teen with a numismatic curiosity to a moderator of the best coin forum on the net. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all...Bob, Jason, Chris, Brad...and everyone else for that matter for helping me along in this fantastic hobby. THANK YOU, THANK YOU LCR!

Contest is over, and I will be announcing the winners, now.
The winner of the Lincoln-themed poem is...vickilynn! I thought it was very well-written, and I enjoyed reading it.
The funniest story goes to Will. The ending with the claim form cracked me up! :sign10:
The "slogan" win goes to erdnussbier, because he was the only member to submit one. :tinysmile_hmm_t: I will add it to my signature.

Pm me your addresses guys, I will send the coins out this week!
And thank you to everyone else that entered/commented on the thread!
