I'll keep this as short and sweet as possible- Some details are ommitted because of a pending lawsuit I am pressing.
Here are the facts:
In mid December I shipped a mostly raw consignment to a well known internet auction company for encapsulation. They received it and package was signed for by an employee. All of the coins in the package were processed with the exception of two coins that were on their own submission sheets to PCGS as raw coins. Both coins were to be certified under the "express" service, a more expensive but faster turn-around.
The coins were lost or misplaced by the auction company. Auction company disputes their existence. The seriousness of the situation is that one of the coins, a 1983 Cent listed as FS-401, CLO-001 has a total population of 1 at PCGS, and it's an AU58. The example I had was brown uncirculated as shown in the pictures below. The other coin was a 1930-S/S Nickel in Gem Uncirculated worth in the range of $500-600.
The significance of the 1983 Counterclash Cent is that it is literally the lynchpin to the PCGS Registry set- a collection cannot be complete without that coin and there are far fewer examples than serious cash-paying collectors. With 25 years experience in coins it is my strong conviction that this coin in uncirculated grade slabbed by PCGS offered in a competetive, auction-style open market sale could easily attract bids in the range of $10,000 to $20,000.
The big coin in question belongs to a non, or rather novice collector whose entire family is inspired by this rare coin. They work on searching for varieties and assembling sets together. My motivation is to do right by the owner of the coin and not allow a bad situation to leave a black mark on this hobby we all love.
Below is the coin, I grade it as an MS63 Brown with natural blue toning from being saved in a tissue for over a decade since being found in circulation.
Please, I encourage you to post this, images or links to this thread in any other coin forums you frequent. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.
The coin in question is marked by a small scratch between the A of AMERICA and the designer's initials FG. There is also a small area of discoloration behind Lincoln's head.
Here are links to the images of the nickel, I don't know how to enlarge them and retain detail, any help would be appreciateed!
