What's going on with the bottom of vertical bar and the upper left corner? (I know it has some plating issues on the bottom.

I believe there was a damaged mintmark punch used in 1988, and that is what you are seeing.

Well..the reason for the link was to avoid copyright infringement.


But the bigger point..to show that this one fooled even the best..at least for a bit.

You are absolutely correct. It was not until we started seeing it on different dies that we came up with the conclusion of a damaged punch. I am always studying the coins I search, and the ones sent to me for attribution. Doesn't matter how long you are in the hobby, there is always something to learn.
