View Full Version : 1910 Matte Proof?

Is it possible that this coin is a matte proof? Recently there has been some discussion of matte proofs, and I thought I'd get to asking while it was on everyone's mind. The rims seem to be very sharp and the details and finish of the coin had me scratching my head. Also, The diagnostics in the Kevin Flynn's book seem to match up with this coin. I am well aware this is probably wishful thinking on my part but, I had to ask. On a side note, I should be receiving a 1910 MPL very shortly, so when I do I'll post comparison pics.Thanks in advance, I appreciate the help.

Beautiful coin. All the ones I seen have die scratches below the bust and around WE TRUST. You can get really good pictures off heritage to compare with.

I'm no expert, but from what I've learned and seen in pics, it looks good to me.
Either way, nice coin.

I don't think its a proof. A nice coin but not a proof to me. Doesnt have any of the markers seen on any 1910 I seen. Look up heritage auctions and compare it.

I'm definitely not an expert on Matte Proofs, but I would expect the rim on the outside to be more sharp...I would say it's a nice coin, but I don't think it's a proof.

Kevin Flynn's book says there were two die pairings for 1910...
They were struck in 1909-1915 with 1,000-4,000 mintage numbers for the different years. So they are probably only used one die per year? But who knows for sure? Roughly a total of 17,000 examples adding the "Red Book" numbers.

The coin in this thread is not proof. Details are not sharp enough, rim not sharp enough, and the fields are not the right texture.
Many of the 1910 plain coins were struck pretty well - some better than others. But all of them are detectable from a proof rather easily once you get some experience looking at the proofs.

I've never seen one that didn't have the die gouge above the first T in TRUST. Take a look at this image-

The rim sure doesn't look very sharp to me on that coin, J. Am I wrong..? Especially at the top near your gouge.

Thank you everyone, either way this coin looks like it's an upgrade to my current 1910 MS63BN example. I'm happy, I just can't wait to get my hands on a matte proof. Hopefully it'll show up tomorrow.
