View Full Version : CONTEST 10LBS OF S MINT WHEATS

pennies4pennies
01-24-2014, 09:37 PM
Welcome everybody. It's been a long time since I been on the LCR. I used to have contest back earlier last year. Health problems keep me away plus I been rebuilding my model A from the ground up.
Anyway I couldn't think of a better way to introduce my self to all the new members that don't know me.

PLEASE READ ALL BELOW!!!!!
Any questions please ask here on this post.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Now what you came for.
I am given away 10 lbs. of S mint wheat cents that are unsearched. Maybe something good in there and maybe not. But they are unsearched wheat cents. The dates are from 1940 to 1955. There are no steel cents in the box.
Now you know what you can win so lets get to the contest rules.

RULES

The contest will start Monday night at this same post. ( I want to give everybody time to read this before it starts)

There will be 5 days for this contest and as time goes on some people will be taking out. This more of a guessing game.
Not hard at all and everybody is welcome to give there guess. Each night starting Monday you will have to make a guess before 9:00 est.
REMEMBER GUESSES HAVE TO BE MADE BY 9:00 pm EST THE NEXT NIGHT!!!!!!!

Here is how it goes.
Monday night I will post a picture of a wheat cent from the box and all you have to do is guess the weight.
( example 3.05, 3.10, 3.11 , 3.14 and so on.) These are just examples!!!!!. I need the weight of the coin.
I'll post Monday night the first coin. Then Tuesday night at 9:00 pm est the closest 5 people to the correct weight go to the next step. Everybody else is out. Just the closest 5 go on. In case of ties for the closes guess I will let them move forward with the rest. This is only the closest ties.
I will not tell you the weight of the coin until the contest is over. I will take a picture of the coin and weight and show at the end of the contest. This way you know there is no cheating done by me.

Okay the first night is done and now to the next part of the contest. The following night Tuesday I will post a picture of 2 coins.
One will be from Monday night and a new one. Now I need the guess of both coins together, ( example-- 6.30 / 6.25 / 6.33)
grams weight again for both coins. Closest 4 move on, plus any ties.

On to Wednesday night at 9:00 pm est I will post the last 2 cents plus another new one. Again I need weight in grams for all three combine together. closes three move on.

Thursday night the same thing. last 3 cents plus another new one. total weight again for all. another person will be taking away from the contest. closes. 2 will move on.

Friday. 9:00 pm est I'll post the last 4 cents plus another one. The again I need total weight of the 5 coins. The closest wins.

The runner up will get a roll of S mint wheat.
If it is a tie at the end then there will be a tie breaker guess.

Everybody that enters will get at least on S mint wheat cent from my unsearched pile. Even if you lose right off the get go. So everybody will get something.
I will need everybody's address. PM to me so I can mail out your coin or coins.
Please don't put address in this post, just PM me. There is no cost to no one playing. I will pay for everything.

BE HERE Monday NIGHT AT 9:00 pm EST FOR THE START.
The only thing I ask is to post any findings here on the LCR.
Best of luck to all!!!!

Frank, this sounds like a fun contest. However, a have one question. What precision are you looking for in our guesses (how many decimal places)?
Not sure what the precision of you balance is.
Just a thought I had.

Ed

Ed what I am looking for is weight. If you put a cent on a scale that can give grams . Your basic wheat cent is 3.11 grams. You know I did make a mistake up top and I'll fix it. There is no OZ. Just grams.
I don't know why I said oz and grams. LOL old age.

Just give what you think the coin weight is. Now copper cents as you know are not always 3.11 grams. I have seen them around 3.00 and as far as 3.18 per coin. Just make your best guess and if you are one of the closest you move on the next night. Your first answer would be between 3.00 to 3.18. but remember basic weight is 3.11. Remember there is something to think about and that would be if the coin is worn then the weight will be less. Just look at the picture I post Monday night and make a guess.
Frank

pennies4pennies
01-25-2014, 09:56 AM
example only not the coins in the contest.

Here is a example of what I'm looking for. THIS IS NOT THE COIN TO GUESS ON. This is a 1940S. As you see it's weight is 3.09 grams. 3 being the grams. This is important. To make guess closer I need .00 to .18. so your guess would be between 3.00 to 3.18 for the first coin.
First night (In the first picture the correct weight would be 3.09 grams.)
2nd night (In the second picture the correct weight would be 6.20)
The third night if still in would be three cents total weight and so the next 2 night after.
So each night you take the night before coin and the coin that night and give a guess. Each night a coin is added until there will be 5 coins.
Remember the closest 5 will go to the next night. Then each night there will be one person taking out.

There is no OZ. Just grams.
I don't know why I said oz and grams. LOL old age.

I was wondering, but I just figured that was part of the contest, Frank, to figure out the conversion. That would have been my excuse! :sign10:

Okay Best the Luck to everybody!!!
You don't have to answer right now. Just make sure you post your answer before 9:00 PM EST tomorrow night.
Tomorrow night I will let you know who the 5 people that will move to the next day. Tie will move forward also.
I will need everybody's real name and LCR name and address. PLEASE PM INFO, DO NOT PUT IT HERE ON THE POST. ANSWERS ARE POSTED HERE!!!! If you don't make it to the next round you will still get a S mint wheat cent not checked for anything. You might get lucky.

Now to the coin. This coin is from the box and will stay with the box for the winner.
I need a guess anywhere from 3.00 to 3.18. It could be a light cent or it could be heavy cent. judge by the picture.

You can change your answer if you like. Come 9:00 tomorrow night is cut off of any answers.

I took a picture of the coin on the scale which I'll show at the end of the contest.

Day 1 coin is a 1946S.
Good Luck to all!!!!!!

My roll is hung up in Harrisburg, since the 2nd... Knowing USPS it will suddenly be marked DELIVERED and either show up or disappear forever... Stay tuned

pennies4pennies
02-04-2014, 07:12 PM
Yep you're right about the USPS. My wife is a mail carrier. She said they shut down to many disabusing faculties and has slowed the mail down. I have had packages saying they were somewhere else and that same day they were delivered. Hang in there. I have only had one package disappear in Harrisburg and that was going to Brad many years ago. I think it was 3 1939 DDOs.

Arjohn
02-04-2014, 08:20 PM
Part of the problem here is my address is identical to anothers except for the street name. We live in a town-home development so we have mailboxes all ganged together. I get their mail, they get mine. 90% of the time I will take them the mail I get but only recently have I been getting it back. So far, I have lost 3 traced mails -- showing delivered but never making it here. PO says
"we'll look into it," meaning -- you're screwed. I have to depend upon the kindness of strangers to get my mail. So, I wait...

pennies4pennies

Went through my roll. Nothing leapped out at me, but will give each a close in hand search as I assimilate them into my collection. I DID find a few coins in exceptionally good condition, a 51S with mint luster, and a couple of later 50's in MS condition (in my opinion) they may definitely replace a few S's in my collection. One in particular that I need to explore more; is one thay "may" be missing the final numeral (greaser) -- but I think I detect a ghost of it yet, so I want to put it under closer inspection ans see if it might just be wear.... Thank you much for the prize!! Oh -- I found a Plain and D in there too -- so I am gonna market them on EBAY as Error S coins... :sign10:

Just to hit on a point made in this thread-

I'd strongly urge anyone who collects or receives coins by mail to obtain a Post Office BOX. I pretty much never have issues with delivery. Additionally, there have been many cases of collector's houses being robbed because it was no secret to anyone what their interests were. Many companies still ship packages with the word "coin" in their return address or business name. This is DANGEROUS, beyond simply having your package stolen.

Also, if you're consistently not getting packages that were marked as delivered- it's important to file a complaint with your post office each time. When the same thing occurs at multiple addresses with regularity, the Postal Inspector gets involved- postal employees are fired every week for theft- and they lose their pension, benefits and everything else they'd worked for up to that point. Sort facilities are the most common origin of theft, but carriers have been known to be less than honest too.

I'm not down on the post office in general- statistically, they're fantastic. But problems do happen and unless you speak up about it, it's not a problem for anyone else.

I our case we have narrowed it down to ONLY happening when a sub was on. Because my home and another have identical addresses except for street name. A sign noting the addresses was posted in the sorting area - alerting everyone of the similarities. We shall see

Everybody is very welcome for the coins. I'm glad there's a few good finds. Sounds like Alex is having a blast. Double check your coins and make sure you can see all letters/eyes/date and so on. You don't know how many times I have look through wheats cents to only find later there was some RPMs and a few DDOs. Two of my new discovery coins years ago came by the same way. Checking my pile again and there they were. I'm glad everybody is enjoying them. Still debating on what to do with my last 10 LBS , search or maybe sell.
