    Coin and Die Sets?

I was on another site a couple of weeks ago and saw a thread on the Coin & Die Sets the US Mint sold at one time. I knew the Mint sold these at one point but had never actually looked at one before.

With each set came a Certificate of Authenticity that contained the following information for each die that was included in the set.

    Producing Mint
    Die Serial Number
    Coin
    Type
    In Service Date
    Press Number
    Press Type
    Number of Strikes
    Retirement Date
    Reason for retirement

Also included with the set was a coin described as one of the first acceptable production coins struck with the die.

So apparently the US Mint maintains detailed production records, which is no surprise – it’s the US Government, on every working die. So where can a person find these records? I also wonder if the Mint retains an example of a production coin for every die placed in service?

The Mint has an annual report about how many dies were used and how many coins were struck. That report does not detail each die with the info you have, but I am sure it is maintained some where. I do not know if it is something you can request, but a letter to the Mint might be all you need.

You can order the mint records and there is a thread on it somewhere around here. I believe it has the amount of dies used that year and possibly the amount of coins struck. I know I found some info online but can't remember key words. Here is a start http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint...=annual_report
