I don't know if this is "brass" or just a nice toner. I have included pictures of the 1993 in question as well as a nice red 1993 for comparison. The "brass" one is on the right. What do you guys think?

I usually put these in a tube and save them, but I don't believe they'll ever really catch on because the composition really doesn't have to be off by much to achieve this....I've heard just a small amount of zinc dissolved in the plating tank will cause the color change. But they sure do stand out when you're going through a pile of cents :D

They do really stand out! I had this one put aside from roll search. I was looking at something else on Ken Potter's site and came across this http://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm . Thats what made me pull this one out and take some shots of it.

I've got a bunch of these too. They really do pop when you find them.

Potter's site is probably where I read how it happens. He is trying to create a market for them, and there is nothing wrong with that at all.....I just don't think they'll catch on.

I have seen a lot of these lately and thought it was just off color due to circ staining... Guess I need to look again!!!

I agree with that and the ones in those old signature slabs have been there for a long time.

These were hyped long ago, I remember in the late 80s the big coin magazines had full page ads. They called them "yellow jackets" and said that they were brass plated and that they were made on planchets that were supposed to be used for some gyms tokens but got sent to the mint by mistake. I doubt it was correct because later they turned up for other years and the mint said it was from zincs dissolved in the plating vats.

If someone can find those old magazine ads it would be fun to see them again :)

I have two problems with these-

1) I believe that there are other causes that can basically tone a coin this color. I don't think you can just eyeball these things and make the determination that the color is due to zinc dissolved in the plating vat. I'm sure that's the case with some, but short of expensive analysis, I don't think that can be verified.

2) Having the color of the planchets vary due to minor composition differences is nothing new to the series(the yellowish color of many 54S and 55S cents come to mind).

I cannot imagine how bogus examples of this one were sold online! Too easy to fake the color. Just a thought....

I have two problems with these-

Yes and a third problem is that if a cent is soaked in cola then let it dry on the coin then wash it off, it creates a similar yellow look.

And the luster still remains ?
I still ascribe to Occam's Razor.....zinc has been in the composition since the beginning and finding these is not unusual or rare, plus they seem to be more common on certain years.

We'll have to do an experiment see how close they look LOL :)
