I found another nice 1925 S RPM #1. I have found a few of these over the years but this seems to be the earliest die state I have found yet. It has the red discoloration that some copper cents get (I am guessing some form of verdigris). But other than that it is a nice find.

Do you think this die is much more common than die #3?

This was the first RPM I ever found. I have three of these and none of the others as I recall.

Get some verdi-care or acetone on that and it should look really nice... Nice find!!!

Nice strong example. And yes, in my humble opinion RPM 3 is a bit tougher to find.

One of my favorites. The 'red' color looks like environmental damage of some sort. I have seen in on quite a few earlier date coins.

Thanks everyone. So, the red discoloring would be environmental damage. I am not going to send this in, but if someone submitted a cent that had this color - would PCGS grade it as a "details - damaged" coin?

I've only heard this once or twice but could the color be a result of someone attempting to clean it with ketchup years ago?

Very nice! I woild have to agree that 003 is more uncommon. I've only cherried one 003, and multiple 001's. The repunch on yours does show very well!

I do not believe ketchup would leave the red... rinsing should remove all traces!!!

I've always assumed that rusty red cents were stored with something that was rusting.

I was told one time that it was caused by trace elements in the carbon spotting process. And because of the possible elements from one to another that there were many possible results.Plus PH and humidity also would effect these making even more possibilities. Like Ed said about storage is true. But I don't think this was ever cleaned with ketchup.

OK. So what you guys are really telling me about the ketchup concept is that 8 year old coin doctor on YouTube actually isn't an expert at all? I've been duped! :LOL_Hair:

Great rpm! Bag O Wheats, or bank roll?

Neither. It actually was a pick at a coin show. I even showed the dealer what it was when I found it. He is a VAM variety collector so I knew he would appreciate it.
