This looks to be a damaged coin, but ever so often I see these indentations on coins, could it be caused at the mint?

No, they're just contact marks from a reeded coin. Quite common actually.

I agree... Also known as a bag ding... When coins ship in bags the bags get moved around or dropped and the coins bang into each other!!!
