    1984D mixed bag

Here is a peculiar example of a 1984D Lincoln Memorial Cent.

There appears to be a mixed bag of things going on...

First, the surface is kinda' cruddy. There is a large corrosion ring around the mint mark. It took a hit or two.

There is some bubbling around the "8" giving a false appearance of another "8".

But, I think it may actually bear an RPM.

    What do you think?

The pic is a little blurry, but from the looks of the date I'm thinking it's MD. It all seems to be going that direction.

looks almost like baby 8 With the corrosion I can not tell about the MM... I think the rest is MD, plating issues and die wear!!!

I'm not picking up anything definitive, Allan. It looks fat, but that looks like circulation damage to me in your picture. The upper serif look like it might have a split, but again, that could also be the result of hits. Any way you can get a clearer closer picture of the MM?

Since this coin has no premium, I decided (for the sake of experiment) to soak it in distilled water, then do a quick acetone wash (to remove the corrosion).

The poor thing looks like the lunar surface. It has had several hits. I used a toothpick to try to burst any gas bubbles (inside the 8 and elsewhere).

It is a mess, but it still kinda' looks like it used to be an RPM.

That cleaned up fairly good... There does appear to be a vertical bar inside the MM and a bump just outside the NE corner... Still to messed up to be for sure tho... Looks more like Mars than the moon
