Well, there is plenty of that going around. And I am pretty easy to fool. ... But how did he get those tiny raised ridges of copper on there? And how did he get them to curve up over the chin?

Think of an xacto knife. When you cut into metal with a blade the metal will be displaced above the cut, leaving a high area. Over time this will get smoothed and will kind of fold over the scratch.

Welcome! My guesse would be that someone carved their initials. Determining damage from a mint error is a major part of the learning process so don't worry or be sorry about what you post :) I'm sure it's what brought a lot of us here, and we can still learn from it. Hope to see many more!
