It is environmental damage, spend it before it disappears .

This is definitely Post Mint Damage (PMD). All zinc cents are coated with a very thin layer of copper. This coating behaves similarly to the coating on chocolate M&M's. At first the stronger coating (candy or copper) holds up, but if it dissolves or becomes cracked, it exposes the much softer chocolate (or the analogous zinc underlayer). Once exposed, rapid decomposition of the underlying material will occur just like on your coin. I doubt that many zinc cents will survive long into the future. They may be extreme rarities in any condition in a 100 years of so.
