Hello All,
Found these mintmark errors? while going thru my coins.
Any info would be helpful - are they common? any collector interest? value?

As you can see the S is too high, touching the stem of the 5. I believe this is called a misplaced mintmark.

As you can see the S is too high, almost between the 9 and 4, should be lower - have looked at other 44s' i have and it is much lower than this.

The D in this one is crooked.

Any info on these would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Twisted

This mint mark placement is well within acceptable tolerances. Up until (I believe 1989) mint marks were hand punched into the working dies so they can be in widely varying places even on same date minted coins.

Roller is correct...but if the mint mark actually touches another part of the design, it might fetch a premium. Would need to see pics to say for sure.

I've seen that 1953-S a few times before....here is a thread on it :http://www.lincolncentforum.com/forum/showthread.php?25498-1953-S-w-mintmark-touching-tail-of-5&highlight=1953-S

Please note that it may be an RPM

I can not tell for sure with the hits on the upper serif and the lower curve... Were you able to match any markers???

jfines69,
Not yet, as you can tell it is not a mint coin. I will look for the markers sometime this weekend - just hoping that the coin is in good enough shape to find the markers, if they are indeed there.

will post what i found out - whether it is or isn't or if i am unable to tell.

Just as i figured the coin is not in good enough shape to find any of the markers - if there were any at all

An exact match on the mint mark location is usually pretty reliable along with seeing the RPM....markers are nice to confirm it but not always necessary

Thanks for the update... To bad there is damage... If you really need to know for sure if there is a RPM it may need to be sent in for an in hand look by one of the pros... As Maineman stated the MM location is a really good sign and for me I just may not be able to see the RPM... It may be there!!!

twistedt...please be careful about copying/pasting photos from other web sites here. The ones on coppercoins are copyright protected so sometimes a link to the photo is better or you can receive permission from Chuck or myself. No problem with this case, but you just need to know.
