View Full Version : Should I search my Pennies?

I have recently sorted the pocket change I have been keeping for 20+ years and am trying to decide how much time I should spend sorting/inspecting through my roughly 40+ lbs. of pennies. I am debating starting a coin collection, but feel like I collect to many things already and not sure I can devote the time to a new hobby (I have been keeping my wheat's for years, have all the '09 pennies, the '04-'05 nickels, state quarters and Presidential dollars--so I guess I am already collecting). If I don't start a big collection, is the potential financial gain worth inspecting all of my pennies (especially the post 1982's). I don't know much about coins and would appreciate any input.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum! That can only be answered by you. I suggest starting to search and study what to look for. If it gets tiresome and boring then you have answered your own question. I personally would love to look through a stash like you have!

Welcome to the forum! I complete agree that doing a little research on what to look for would be a good place to start.

If a big financial gain is expected by searching 40 lbs of pennies, then the answer is no.

Thanks to everyone for responding and the welcome notes. I have purchased a loupe and decided to search my pennies and have separated them by unknown (dirty), pre-1982, 1982, 80s, 90s and the 2000s. As it turns out, I have 57.5 pounds of pennies and am looking forward to seeing what I have.

Sounds like a great way to start!

If you get addicted like most of us then it will seem like 57.5 lbs is just a few days of fun
So be careful, if you find a few goodies in there you'll probably be hooked!

You have made a wise/fun decision! That is great! The LCF has a sister site where you can search different years and see photos of what to look for, here is the link
