When I first built this beast I posted picks here. I added a few things , a focus rail for one , and though it's somewhat laughable the lighting is better.
The main light is a desk lamp with a LED spot light bulb and Kimwipe lens cleaning tissue extended out as a diffuser. For close-ups I direct this light into part of a old spray bottle cut to fit around the lens which diffuses the light even more.
Lordy , I hope Ray doesn't see this !
The coin pics I have included were taken while I took pics of the rig.

That's truly fascinating! I like it! Hey, there's nothing wrong with a little redneck engineering when necessary. You should see my phone pic rigging! What do the golfers say? "It's not how you drive but how you arrive! "

The exceptional quality of the final pics speak for themselves. Plus, wood is a good vibration dampener. I must say that horizontal setups for coins are rare. Usually folks do vertical so the coin is sitting flat, but obviously that's not written in stone!

The idea for my rig came from a comment in a Forum post , somewhere, about a "sled" they used when photographing coins. A 3d image of my rig popped up and all I had to do was build it.
Funny thing, as I continued reading that post long ago the "sled" had nothing to do with holding a camera !

All you need now is a cup holder for your 'Eggnog'

The photo of the 1955 (noted here) looks like it was taken with several extension tubes stacked with a 50-55 mm objective lens.
How many mm of extension tubes (??) are in the setup shown in your post for this image?

OK, so I was looking through the photos of your rig and I thought what a cool setup, but as far as pictures go... Then I almost fell out of my chair when I saw your pictures - I mean I really jumped! What outstanding photos - both full view as well as the close ups. Lighting is really good; you can see the high and low points of the bed of the coin. Detail is very sharp. Color is spot on; the temperatures of your lamps is about perfect. Thank you so much for showing us your setup - there is something to learn from everyone - like your cutup bottle. I mean wow - what great photography.
