    1956D RPM 8? A little help please

I found this guy in a wheat bag a couple weeks ago but I can't make up my mind about it. No markers are present. I have included two pictures of the same coin with different lighting angles. In the first picture, the anomaly really does look like RPM 8 in it's later stages. However, you can see in the second picture that there is some damage underneath the date and mint mark close to the anomaly. What is everyone's thought? Is that anomaly under the mint mark the extra punch of RPM 8 or is it pushed up metal from the damage?

It sure looks like. That's a tough one. I hate that damage.

It does look like RPM 8 in its later die stages but I would think the die crack on the shoulder would still be there even in a VLDS.

That's what I was thinking too. The obverse die cracks cannot have disappeared, but I know they might be obscured or smoothed over from wear. I don't know if we can be sure on this one without a definitive marker showing, but it sure does look like it. I suppose it is also possible there is pareidolia at work here with all the dings in the area. Take one more hard look for the cracks in the head and shoulder.

In my opinion, this is definitely RPM-008.

Mintmark position is Good - this is RPM#8 agree with Bob. Dave look at Coneca's stage "B" -I bet wear is affecting the die crack - it's very light in this stage"- EDIT - Looking at the rim near the date I think your LEDS-EMDS when the crack was starting to form. In otherwords - your in between die stages. If you still cannot figure die state then post some pics - close up of the Motto OBV and REV and we'll take a look.

Looks like VVs Stage B an early Stage B prior to the crack showing up http://varietyvista.com/02a%20LC%20R...956DRPM008.htm Nice find!!!

Thanks everyone. I just doubled checked and the die crack on the shoulder must have been rubbed off. I really appreciate everyone's help. I am not too concerned about identifying the die stage. Since the damage near the mint mark is very distracting, it wouldn't make a great study coin.

Actually Dave I learned a few things about die markers from the conversations in this thread so id say it was a great study coin.
