I was pretty excited to see this, obvious with the naked eye. Blob in the "B" of LIBERTY as well there is a blob on the second U of UNUM on reverse.

Hope these photos are good enough. Still figuring out the camera/lighting/zoom.

Is this a true Doubled Die?

Also I found what I believe is a 1956-D RPM with a westward spread and a 1956-D OMM where I believe I can see a faint S under and to the west of the D. This will be harder to photograph but I did capture the D over D well enough. (will post separately)

Thank you for your help,
Regards
Pam

Sorry, but that's md. Flat, shelf like and takes away from the original size of the numbers when removed.

You are doing great Pam, and learning fast! You will find a doubled die real soon at this rate!

Your photos are looking good too! Nice job!

Thank you Vab2013, for all your encouragements and compliments. I've had these cent coins for about four months and I've watched A LOT of YouTube videos as well as reading forums, websites and blogs. I so appreciate all the time and effort. I could have never had so much fun and learned as much as I have so far without the help of the Lincoln Cent coin community. I also bought a metal detector. For kicks and giggles but one never knows if a treasure lurks beneath the dirt. :)

That is awesome that you are doing so much research! You will have fun with the metal detector! There are several members that have metal detectors so if you run into any snags just ask. Looking forward to seeing your next find! You can call me Viv...less typing!

Rather than start a new thread I'm going to add another photo I took (because of the blob in B of LIBERTY (a die chip)) and I noticed more doubling on the date 1957. I remember reading about the serif being retained to be true doubling. The problem I have is I can't get my eye close enough to really know. If this coin is also MD then I think I'll know what those look like. Hopefully, every coin is so different!

This one is over my head, but it's possible that other members here know that to be a doubled die for reasons you listed, die chip in B and the serif. Someone will chime in and help you!

If you have not already found this, there are websites to help with attributing your finds. My favorite is http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php but there's also Wexler's http://www.doubleddie.com/58201.html and Variety Vista http://www.varietyvista.com/index.htm

There's lots of good information and photos on these websites! That way you can narrow it down... like I think this may be _________ and it helps everyone else know what you are seeing.

Talking about your top coin.

Yes it is MD.

But it's from a die that had something lose in the set-up and was making repeated almost identical MD coins and it's from a well known die, maybe the best example of a repeater and they are collectable and sometimes sell for good price even though it's not a doubled die. Some collectors won't want it since it's MD but some will because it's so extreme and that die is well known. Many members on here have coins from that die.

Like the others said... MD... The second coin looks to be MD also!!!

I agree with Ed. I think I have three or four - all the same die. Each one shows the machine doubling a little different. From what I can gather the die caused MD on the date for an extended period of the die run.

Question about the T of LIBERTY. I have seen it on other coins/years and I was wondering what causes the vertical bar of the T not to be centered on the top horizontal bar. Is it just one of those design/engraving variables? Thanks in advance, Cliff

Because it's not centered :LOL_Hair: Sorry... I couldn't resist... That is a good question... Probably would be best in a separate thread with some images... I have also noticed that and just thought of it as normal???
