Recently there have been a couple of formerly encased LCs posted... I forgot I had this and re-found it while searching for my heavily worn die on a 25c... I included some pointers to help follow along... We can notice how the coin was pressed into the Lucky Coin holder... The rims have been compressed and even show the flow lines from the tool used... I included 3D images... Hope this helps in the future with identification of these types of coins... Remember there are many ways to encase a coin so not all will be exactly like this one but similar in nature... The case is from the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada... The pictures can be downloaded and used by any one for their use!!!

Wow Jim that is really cool looking! Your 3D images are great! Thank you for posting this lucky coin so we can see the detail of what happens to the coin when it is encased!

Really fantastic images Jim. I always wondered about the process used to make these.
Almost looks like they used some sort of rotary tool to remove any burr formed where the two metals come together.
Excellent example .

Glad ya'll like it... No burrs would form if the tool (die) used was kept in a serviceable condition (no chips or cracks)... When the coins edge and the holder are compressed the metals flow toward the gap and are pushed into each other creating an almost welded seam!!!

So all those ridges perpendicular to the rim are on the "die" (for lack of a better term) and then transferred as it compresses the two metals together?

That's strange.
I think the ones I've had the copper isn't raised above the ring of the holder.
Was that one pressed tighter? Or is some of that illusion?

It's also confusing like it looks like there's a level (level copper to holder) shelf then the rim goes up. Not sure how that can be unless they use some sort of press that has a cutout when the closed it.

Not that you should destroy it, but if you have a similar ex-encased one you might try showing the same pics of one out of the holder to go with those in holder pics. :)

That is crazy looking! This is a great example though to show when the question arises again. Fantastic pics Jim!!

Some of the letters are actually sheared off at the tops closest to the rim area... There is little rim remaining... There is no illusion about the joint area being flattened... If you could look at it from the side it would look like an inverted T... I may need to make a drawing or composite image to illustrate it better!!!

I am currently a bust on composite images... Go figure :LOL_Hair: I am attempting to make a 3D composite pic but alas - I am no Ray Parkhurst... I will attempt again before trying to make a drawing!!!

I'm blown away by the images as well Jim! Stunning! They're almost like images from a Scanning Electron Microscope.

Well I tried some composite pics... Hopefully they show the area where the coin and case merged a little better... I tried getting pics from the edge view but unfortunately my camera and lens can not look around corners :LOL_Hair: so I had to create the 3D images and then rotate to an angle... I numbered the images and included some pointers and notes... Even the casino has issues with misaligned dies :LOL_Hair:

I can only dream of doing everything well :sign10: According to the VA I don't even fall well - I catch myself if possible or go with the fall to prevent injury :sign10:
