Recently picked up this mint set for regular price at the local shop. They know about the small date variety yet do not recognize the characteristics. Admittedly, sometimes the variety is difficult to pick out (I've made my share of mistaken identifications) but this one is rather obvious. Would you break out the sm dt or leave it in the set?

Very nice find and great looking coin! It looks like where it was just in cello the jacket took some hits.

Way to go Roller for catching this nice 70S SD! Waiting to see what the pros say about breaking it out of the set.

I would leave it in there George. I have a proof small date in the cello but also a proof small date that was removed from the set. Any sort of additional protection for that coin is a plus!

I have a 1955 proof set that for some reason I took out of the original pack. Regretted it ever since.
There are bunches of 70-S SD singles floating around. I would leave it.
That comes from someone with boxes of mint/proof sets with varieties taking up space .

I'm glad you asked this because I found one also recently.
Is there any plus or added value to getting it slabbed?

The premium is not sufficient, in my opinion, to pay for slabbing.

I would keep it in the set/cello.

Many of the 70-S SDs and RPM-1s come from mint sets. Always worth looking for them when you see sets for sale.
