Thank you Larry J! You know how I fuss about Alabama coins being so dirty... well this brick must have originated from Illinois! I have pulled out several really nice AU/BU's already! One that either has cartwheel luster or it has strange die flow lines, never seen one like this so it's puzzling me, maybe I can get a photo of it it's super shiny and nice looking!

Have you all been looking for the phantom Ds on them?
I think it's the 98-P WAM that has them.

I was asking Larry, I know you have 10 99 and 00 but no 99, I was keeping track :)

But I thought Larry had a lot more of them like near a roll.

LOL, where a D would be below the date but on the plains.
They are on a bunch of years but some of the 98 WAMs have a pretty clear one, might just be one die that shows it well.

Yeah... Larry J. probably does have rolls of WAM's, he's probably already taken over the spare bedroom for his RPM's... must have a very sweet wife!

Ed, it looks like from the article that post 1996 up through 1999 has them and 99 Philly mint sets do. So does that mean business strikes from 1997 to 1999 Philly's could have the Phantom D? Is it just the WAM's for 98-99 or all of them? It doesn't seem mention the 2000's so I guess they don't have the almost invisible "D".

Here is the article again http://www.lincolncentresource.com/FAQ/PhantomD.html

Best I can make out of it is from atleast 96 through 99 but I don't see anyone verifying an end date,

Don't know the answer, like how they did it from the time they stopped punching them up to 96 or the exact year they stopped. Maybe it coincides with when they made cent dies in Denver but I'm not sure about that, I mean not sure even when Denver makes dies if they truly go from start like galvanos or if some upstream stuff is shared.

Well Ed, it says post 1996 so I'm not sure if that would include 1996? It's probably very difficult to see unless the coin is BU, maybe AU? Your question about this might be a good one for John-onecent1909. I'll pm him and ask him to stop by this thread for us. Thank you Ed!

Maybe it coincides with when they made cent dies in Denver but I'm not sure about that,

The first dies made at the Denver mint was a 1996 Cent die.
If you go to the Denver Mint and take a tour the die and a cent are in a case during the tour

I would concur with other researcher that it was a Denver hub that was ground down. I believe Philly makes the masters using the Galvano and ships the master to Denver who then make working hubs and working dies.
I think Philly started this process for Denver then ground down the D and used it for Philly coins.

So does that mean business strikes from 1997 to 1999 Philly's could have the Phantom D? Is it just the WAM's for 98-99 or all of them?

They are on any business strike Philly cents. including both standard circulation strike cents and WAM cents (more on that shortly).
They are in 1999 mint sets. I did buy a set just to have one. I tried but could not get a good pic.
I have never heard of 2000 or newer. BJ shows a 1997 but I have never seen one in hand.

in hand I have seen a 98 WAM and a 99 standard from a mint set

There are 4 reverse dies that make up the 1999 WAMs which I think 2 were used in 1998 and also again in 1999. The obverse die amount of 1999 would be very small. 4-6ish if they did pair a reverse with more than one obverse die.
With this info I would think that 1999 WAMs do not have Phantom D mint marks.
Again I have heard of nothing in the 2000 years so 2000 WAM phantom D mint marks probably do not exist.
This leaves the 1998 WAM as the only Cir WAM to have a Phantom D mint mark possibility.

Thank you very much John for this information! Going to check my 98 WAM's and see if something shows up! Just curious, does BJ have his 1997 listed on his website or did you just hear about it from him?

Edit: John, I just found the 1997 Phantom D on Error-ref.com

Viv,
take your coin. hold it normally. look at the field while tilting slightly back and forth with the light coming from top and then again from bottom.
Look at the field. do not try to see the D...try to see the field. see if it stays flat or if it has a disturbance.
