    1989 p with reverse of 1988

Looking for a listing with a 1989 obverse and a 1988 reverse, this is bad, the coin took a bad hit on both sides of the rim, and I think the reverse is a 1988. My first one and it is damaged. Oh well better luck next time. I could be wrong though, please have a look and tell me what you see is it or is it not a 1988 reverse?.Thanks....................... dinkyblue

This is an abraided but normal reverse for 1989. Notice how close the F is to the base of the Memorial.

So sad ... My reverse consumption engine was a broken fuel gauge ... gonna look at coins now. John

Like the three legged buffalo nickle, so the top of the serif was erased, I'm glad it wasn't an RDV due to the damage on the rim. Now I can throw it back into circulation. Thank for the help.................Dan

Yours does show the squared shape of the bottom curve from a overpolished 1989 die

For the 88 and the 89 reverses. look at the top of the G it ends at different spots.
the 88 ends at the outside edge of the vertical line. the 89 ends just inside of the inside edge of the vertical line.
the distance of the FG and the shape of the middle bar of the F also help
the inward and down bellow the curve lines can be polished off at the mint.
talking with Dr.Wiles at CONECA no known and proven 1989 reverse of 1988 exist.
Be careful. For study I have bought a raw 1989 rev 1988 and a SEGS graded XF 45 1989 rev 1988.
both were polished dies with 1989 rev 1989 dies.

I may be wrong, but I think if you find one it will be the first.

I do a little self test when I look at the 1989's 1988's I look at the reverse first and determine if it is a 1989 or 1988 then I turn it and see what it is. When I first saw this coin I said 88 and then turned it saw it was an 89. But looks can be deceiving for me anyway. I'll hang on to it for now. Would be interesting to know how your study turns out. Thank you onecent1909 and enamel7 for your comments......................Dan

My thought was the hit that the memorial building took on the right corner smashed it and made it look closer to the F notice how the bottom of the F looks closer to the building, not saying your not right just letting you know what I see ....................Dan

Yes, it did, just not that much...and that is part of the problem with all the damage, it would be an even bigger stretch to try and attribute this one as anything other than normal....if you know what I mean
