I need some help gang. I bought this coin a couple years ago. It was attributed and listed on eBay as RPM-083 Stage "B". I remember looking it over when I got it and setting it aside as I didn't think it matched RPM-083. I found it yesterday in my pile of "attribute later" coins. I still don't believe it is 083. I am not even 100% sure the curved raised line inside the bowl of the D is part of a mint mark. It could be a gouge, though it mimics the curve of a D. There are a couple listings that have similar curves inside the bowl, but they all show evidence of the left side of the repunching (I.E. serifs or the vertical bar). RPM-003, 005, and 006 are all similar examples.

Either way, gouge or repunch, I can't match it up. There are a ton of scratches through LIBERTY, so I included an image for possible markers. This one is driving me nuts.

The serif on top is farther to the east. The split on the bottom is practically dead center of the serif. I hope the images are good enough. The first image is the best for an overlay. The others are tilted a little to highlight the repunch. Thanks gang for any help!

I don't believe the anomaly inside the mintmark is part of another punching. If it is, it would be a D/D/D as it could not coincide with the split serifs. I do agree that it is not RPM-083 as the mint mark placement is incorrect. Your mintmark is higher than that of 083. This one borders on being too minor based on serifs alone. I still don't know what the anomaly is inside the mintmark, but I will look and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for your input and attention Bob. I can't say I disagree with anything you said. There was an MS65 coin on eBay for what seemed like a year. I can't remember the exact date. It was a '56-D, '58-D, or '61-D, but it had a similar anomaly. I know I ran into it periodically and would always check to see if I could find a listing. I finally realized I was doing this over and over and stopped. I bet it's still up. I think it opened at $18+3.50 shipping, so unless someone took a chance at a new listing, it probably never sold. I'll look for it for a few minutes.

Jay, I looked at all the VV and CC 60Ds and could not find a match. I probably have a duplicate of yours in the hoard of unattributed 60D Lincolns I have accumulated. I believe that Wexler has many more 60D RPMs but they are not available now except for #s 268 and 269 (http://doubleddie.com/2367800.html).

Did you take a real close look at CCs 088 (http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1960&die_id=1960d1mm088&die_state=lds)??? I will take a closer look a little later at 088 and the other listings... At least we don't need to look at small dates :LOL_Hair:

With permission from Copper Coins and Bobs awesome support I did an overlay using CCs 088 (http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1960&die_id=1960d1mm088&die_state=lds)... Other than die stage and circ wear differences it looks to be 088... I will say that CC shows that 088 crosses to VVs 088 (http://varietyvista.com/02b%20LC%20RPMs%20Vol%202/1960DRPM088.htm) which lists Stages A, B and C... I will make an overlay of VVs 088 a little later using the Stage C date/MM image!!!

With permission from Variety Vista and Dr. Wiles support I did an overlay using VVs 088 (http://varietyvista.com/02b%20LC%20RPMs%20Vol%202/1960DRPM088.htm) Stage C date/MM image... This overlay fell into place like CCs... The only thing I am a little skeptical of is the MM shape and size... The shape of Jays appears different than VVs but is really close to CCs??? Also the size of Jays MM when I overlay appears larger??? It swallows (for lack of a better word) VVs MM... It could be a trick of the light between the images or a slight difference in camera angles that I have not been able to detect???

Jim, thank you for your work! I have a Stage C example of VV 088 somewhere. I am 99% sure the cross ref is wrong. I wrote in my spreadsheet that VV 088 looked nothing like CC 088. I could have sworn I started a thread about it here. Let me see if I can find one. Who knows, I might have planned to but never did.

What's strange is how the date, jacket, rim and MM are lined up... Just that the MM on yours swallows the entire VV MM... It did not do that with CCs sample... Old age memory already :LOL_Hair: Wish I could remember what memory was like :LOL_Hair:

Jim, thanks again for the overlays! I am planning to organize my collection soon. My spreadsheet is almost up to date, but my varieties are in no order at all. When I get to the VV 088 I will take it out and try to get an image with the same lighting angle and maybe we can revisit this. You're a Gem...or just a Jim! :sign10:

Evening All,
Sorry but the coin is not RPM#88. Notice his coin has a strong upper serif? #88 does not. Here are pics of #88 Stage A and B.
Eric

Update: No help. The closest I could find was W065 but it is slightly farther south....

Thanks Eric! I was pretty sure, going off of memory and my notes for my stage C, that this coin looked different. I know the placement is close for 1MM-088, but the die would have been completely reworked. All of the die scratches are completely different. I'll go with unlisted until Wexler gets all of his up. Thanks all!

Better to go unlisted instead of having the wrong info... Thanks Eric for the input... It is much appreciated!!!
