This variety is near and dear to my heart, as it was my very first find and launched my collecting passion...32 years ago. In 1989 my company, a microelectronics firm specializing in hybrid modules for military radio and missile applications, had a surplus sale of old equipment. I picked up a Bausch & Lomb StereoZoom4, with the A-stand, for $40. I had just started work a year earlier, and had started my coin collection again after my dry college years by buying some gorgeous OBW rolls (at a flea market), one of which was a 1938-D. Imagine finding a true OBW 1938-D today, and at a flea market!! I opened it up, hoping to find some really nice high grade coins, and when I looked at the coins with the microscope, the D was "not right". After a bit of research I found that the coin was a RPM #2 / DDR #1, and upon inspecting the whole roll I found it contained 20 of them, mostly gems!! I sold a few of them through the SLCC auctions, and was hooked. I still have the nicest ones.

That's a beautiful variety and a beautiful coin. The strength of the class VI DDR is above average.

That's a beautiful variety and a beautiful coin. The strength of the class VI DDR is above average. Thanks, Wendell! It's a fairly clean coin, maybe just light rim damage on the north obverse. This seller always has great pics but the RPM was hiding a little, it was definitely the DDR that jumped out at me. The thickness is great but my favorite part is the distorted O in OF.
