I came across this 1973D penny while searching for wheat pennies in my change. After inspecting it more closely I realized that the word Liberty was missing some letters. It wasn't until looking at it again, later, that I realized the word Liberty also seems to be misspelled. Can someone please give me some insight into what could have caused this?

I too think it is just damage.
Look at it under high magnification and if you don't think it is [damaged] then please post some clearer close-ups of it so we can see what you see. These pics are a bit fuzzy.Comment

I don't believe LIBERTY is misspelled. The I and part of the B appear to have been removed, mostly likely by a machine of some kind. Perhaps a counting machine.
