Years ago my father was big time into metal detecting. I now have thousands of dirty lincoln cents. Back in April, I read an article about cleaning dirty cents that have been dug up. It said, soak the cents in mineral oil for a couple months, the dirt will loosen up and could be safely removed. I have about 50 cents that have been soaking since April 14th.. The soaking has done very little. These cents have been in plastic gallon milk jugs since the late 60's early 70's. Is it the years that may have slowed down the mineral oil solution, or just a dumb idea??

I had no better luck with mine as I was into metal detecting very heavily in the 80's. Another solution you might try is Olive Oil. I really did not have successful luck at 100% with that. Sorry I don't have any better ideas except for Goo Gone. Lets see what others have to say.

Thanks, I checked out Verdi-gone, its not recommended for any kind of build up, I guess this includes dirt. Maybe I'll mix mineral&olive oils together. It's worth a try. Hard to tell what a person will find under dirt..
