"L"on rim

Does anyone know why sometimes the "L", on liberty merges into the rim?
Lots of times " in god we trust " touches the rim. I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I would like to here your comments. There seems to be alot of disagreements about why this happens. What do you think?

There are a few reasons why the L merges onto the rim. Worn dies, die deterioration, and even post mint damage are the primary reasons. Earlier coin designs (primarily the 60s) had the L closer to the rim.
