This set contains Eleven (11) 1980 Lincoln Cents which are a Progression Set of Die Cap Strikes, starting with a 1st strike brockage and progressing to a late stage die cap strike which is very worn out and crinkly, however the date on coin #11 is showing through the cap.

What makes this error set rare is that ALL of the coins are from the same die pair.

These die cap strikes all occurred from the same pair of dies, which are verifiable by die markers, but especially by a large die marker on all the coins (1 thru 11) reverse at "NIT" of "UNITED", where a very large die dent is, and which makes verifying that all the coins are from the same die pair.

Since there are Twenty Two pictures and to large for this thread I have placed the coins into my albums page and I have provided a link here to the two albums. Schroll down to the bottom of the Album Page and you will find the pictures

http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/album.php?u=168

I have posted two picture of the Reverse of the coins here to show the large Die Dent Marker which is the Die Marker on the Reverse of every coin.

All of the coins have been graded and encapsulated by NGC. There are Nine (9) coins graded MS-65 Red/Red Brown and Two (2) graded MS-64 Red.

That is absolutely fascinating! How did you assemble it? Were they found in a $50 mint filled bag? Or a large lot of BU rolls from a single source?

I purchased the whole collection from an error dealer.

I had been looking for a really nice set for about 10 years when I came across this one last year.

I did not ask how they became assembled altogether, but If I get a chance and can get a response I will see if the dealer knows.

Hey Joe,
Do you know, is this really how fast a capped die turns from a brockage to struck through die cap- only 9 or 10 strikes? Or do you think there might be some missing in the progression?

I am not an expert in this arena however there proably are some missing coins in the progression set. But would there be enough discernible detail of the coins to show which sequence they would follow in the set :tinysmile_hmm_t:

I would not have any idea how many coins were struck with the capped die. Maybe someone else can answer the question.

However to find the others would be a daunting task if the you did not have the original source available as to where these came from.

Hi, do you think someone had a bag of 5,000 of this year and they were all found in one bag? Any thoughts?

Joe I think you got took, those are just damaged coins! I feel bad and would like to make you even. I'll take the loss and reimburse you your cost... You know, just to get them out of circulation

Once again, you have an astonishing collection that I would love to be able to assemble... Congrats on that purchase!

Thanks Bob!!!

great minds what to know??? how much are they worth???

You can figure roughly $55.00 (Estimated):O on up for each coin after they are encapsulated. The added price is unknown for having all 11 coins in a matching set.
