    HI everyone

    Hi everyone
I’m new to collecting, started this summer and I have gotten a good education off the net over the first few months. I have 2 1953-D rpm, 1 poorman 55, several missed placed mint marks, etc... but I still can not totally understand how a date can be DD and not the mint mark or the mint mark is rpm and the date isn’t?. I’ve read that the MM is added to the die before the coin is struck so if a coin is DD then wouldn’t everything be doubled? Thanks, Don ps: Here's a pic of my newest find.

This can be a bit confusing, but here goes. Prior to 1990, the mintmarks were added (by hand punching) to the dies AFTER they were hubbed. Doubled dies are made during the hubbing process, therefore, it is possible to have a doubled die, but not a repunched mintmark. The same holds true the other way. The die may be perfect, but when the mintmark was punched into the die, it was moved or repunched, causing the RPMs. There are technically no more RPMs after 1990. If the mintmark is doubled, then it would be considered a doubled die because the mintmark is now added prior to the hubbing.

        Howdy and welcome to LCR!
Your 1969S picture is a very nice example of well known machine doubling for a few of the Lincoln cent years. Some of us put these into our 'special' collections so we have them for comparison when we find more. And, some of us like them regardless of the coin's status in the collecting community.
Keep searching and sharing your finds!
