Good question.

I posed this question to Mike Diamond. It may have been one of the first coins struck by a die cap; however, without the actual weight of this coin, it can be problematic if it is real or not.

Kinda looks real to me, but I am not the error expert. I have seen a really crisp brockage before, so by looking at the photos, it looks OK to me.

I talked with Mike Diamond concerning this error and though it look good, we both voiced the same concern. This is what Mike said;

"I totally agree. Without a weight there's no way to tell if it's authentic. With a soft copper planchet, it's easy to grind off one face and press another cent into the blank surface. This can be done without distorting the die-struck face.
One thing that bugs me about this specimen is how smooth the brockaged surface looks (in between the incuse design elements). One would expect a rougher surface given the look of the opposite face and the considerable circulation it experienced."

Once again the old thought comes to mind, "why is this error not encapsulated"

The overall appearance of the surfaces makes me leery. The reverse shows wear and pitting as well as bag marks, but the overall appearance of the "obverse" lacks these characteristics...

It'd have to be slabbed for me to touch

How can it be a Brockage without the mushroom look or Broadstruck. Anyone have one that is similar to this one that looks like it was just pressed into the back?

Just for info. As you know, you can invert you pics on your computer to create a mirror image.
Hope this wasn't the case.

It sure is a very crisp image. Thats what puzzles me about this coin. How would you get such a crisp image and/or why would ANYONE use such a high grade coin to make the impression? Its just one that would have to be certified.

One side looks raise lettering and the other side looks as it is inbeded lettering.

That is the way it should look if struck by a die cap.
