Just picked this fellow up today- broke down and bought one since I figured they're so hard to find in circulation. What do you think in terms of grade, and do you think the carbon spots on the obverse lower the desirability of it?

The carbon spots are distracting, its always better if they are on the side that does not show the variety. I would grade it MS 64 RED. It may grade lower. No matter what it grades, it is an extremely popular coin and a good investment.

That is a very nice coin. Carbon spots or not it is a desireable coin for me. I also would grade it a 63-64.

I would go MS60-62 with the gouges in the face and the lower rim knicks/dmg..

Not sure if it changes your opinion but on the rim, those are more carbon spots, not nicks.
