Possibly someone with too much idle time who did not like the original date and mintmark on that poor coin.

What is that? A 73D? If for real, it would be a thing of beauty.

Curious. From here it looks like severe die damage that obliterated the date an mintmark. Of course, the extreme and convenient localization of the "die damage" is highly suspicious. I'd love to take a closer look at it. You can contact me at mdia1@aol.com if this appeals to you.

There is just to much raised metal (above the field) for this to be a random act of someone trying to obliterate the date. Unless, this is copper colored solder that has been applied and then scratched or marred to give it that appearance.

I am sure that Mike will be able to figure it out.

I'm sure Mike will have no problems figuring this out, but as I hadn't seen the thread, and I had a slightly different thought (which may be wrong): could it be that the coin was heated with a torch and then the extra metal from the date (1973D?) was manipulated with a sharp tool. I could be completely wrong but sometimes students in high school jewelery classes fool around with coinage when the instructor isn't looking...

Can't be a 73 it is a wheat!

I finally found a moment to study this coin closely. The date area on this wheatback cent was mechanically altered. The obliterated date sits within a larger zone that is brighter than the surrounding coin metal. This zone shows numerous fine scratches. The pattern of lumps and ridges does not resemble any type of damage I'm familiar with and is certainly not any kind of deformation.

I was looking, and from the wear and relief of the coin, I would guess it is from the 1920s. Remember I'm only guessing...
