Is this the result of fire/heat damage? And what happened to the rim?

I have seen this before and suspected it was from heat. If anyone knows for sure they should chime in...

Looks like heat dammage, way back when they first came out with the zinc cents, I use to put them on the edge of the stove to creat odd things like this. But don't let Mom catch you. Anthony

The one thing to remember is that zinc has a lower melt point than copper, so it is possible to melt the zinc inside the copper casing without melting the copper plate. Yes, weird shapes can be obtained by doing this.
