Can some one explan how this happen?

Weak points in the design stress and fracture (bad design and/or overuse), and the bits chip off... thus creating die chips/cracks and BIE's

Thanks Aisha. I must say the mint sure did get there moneys worth in 57. I have alot of these.

For some reason the '50s were loaded with die chips (BIEs and chips in the date).
