Is this an example of a gas bubble under the mint mark?

It is more pronounced than the photo shows.

Ignore the "doubling" on the date (it's just the lighting). Hey, maybe I can pass this one off as DDO on eBay. :tinysmile_hmm_t:

That does appear to be a gas bubble. I fear it could look like this one day!

A good example of plating being pushed aside when the coin was struck.

Yep, occluded gas bubble that presumably is brought on by impurities and heat generated from the strike. The '83 may have had another origin such as a small bit of damage exposing the zinc which, possibly with the presence of water, oxidized and sunk.
