Hello everyone,

I'm a new member and only started in this hobby a little over a year ago. What got me involved was a 1922 plain strong reverse find which lead to a lot of research, joining a local coin club and getting to know lots of dealers within the local area.

This past week I went through 2 boxes of pennies. Found some wheats and a half dozen S Mint mark cents, which are rare to me here in the east.

Anyway long story, short, I have a strange looking 1987 cent which has a raised circular surface running from Lincolns shoulder, through Liberty (though the capital L in Liberty was never completed and shows only as Iiberty) and continues through "In God We Trust" before fading back into the surface of the coin.

The reverse shows a corresponding, though light ring. I know pictures would add to the discussion, unfortunately I have to figure how to get that accomplished. If we have a "expert" here, I'd be happy to send the coin for review.

Sorry for the long introduction, but from browsing this site for a time, I look forward to learning a lot about Lincoln cents.

It sounds like die deterioration common in the 80's where it appears that the surface of the coin is raised near the rim. A photo would help greatly. Just a guess at this point.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the '22 no D find!

I agree, sounds like die fatigue common to plated Lincoln cents in the late '80s and we'll need a picture if you can supply one.

Welcome Bob! I understand your description of the coin (which was good) and Steven is right. Have fun and join in anytime with or without pics.

Thanks, everyone! Not really sure what I'm doing, but will try to add an image of the coin.

Bob,
Welcome to the LCR... I have quite a few of those from the 80s' and some from the 90'... It's most likely just what Jason said... If you want some good info on LCs' go to Jasons' website errorvariety.com... He is an awesome photographer and teacher... Even though I have been collecting for 40 plus years I am new to the coin errors and varieties... This is the place to learn... There are so many people in this litle community that know so much!!!

From the image provided I can confirm die fatigue. Coins such as this are often erroneously identified as a bunch of random errors; some end up on eBay.

Bob,
I hope Jasons' web site is of help to you... There is alot to learn just on the LCs' alone... Some of the folks here collect alot more than just the LCs' and what they learn here translates over to other coins as well... Again welcome to the LC Forum!!!
