It's collar clash. The obverse (hammer) die collided with the top of the collar and/or scraped along its working face.

Thanks for posting that Koinmon. I just found a dime with the same type of anomaly and was wondering the same thing. Check the far edge of the rim near the word LIBERTY. My example is not quite as strong as yours. I am going to post it here so others can see the anomaly can happen on other denominations as well. At least I 'think' this could be caused by the same event that Mike is explaining.

Looks like it to me Jean. Seems like this is a legit error here and it would have some type of premium. Nice finds. I never seen one before so wonder how rare this actually happens?

I am just wondering if we should include this anomaly type on MADdieclashes.com. It is different, but yet it is a clash. I will talk to Mike D. since he is the head honcho on this site.

We are using this example for our "illustrated glossary of relevant terms". MADdieclashes.com is not just about MAD die clashes, but also includes many more unusual clashes as well.

I find these quite often. Exactly what type of premium would these fetch?

Not much on eBay; $1.50-$5 unless it was older or on a higher denomination like an IKE or something...

These seem to occur the most on dimes, perhaps 'cuz of the small size?
