View Full Version : This can't be a 1997 dble ear, right?

I don't think this coin is the '97 DDO (dble ear), but I'd like a second opinion. What I think happened is that early on in circulation, something struck the coin in three places across the face; the bottom strike went across the jaw, over the earlobe and into the hair. The strike depressed the lobe making it appear to be the '97 DDO. I have checked it and re-checked it and I can't find any die marker that is listed on Coneca or Coppercoins websites.

The real problem for me is the character of the lower lobe is all wrong; and the fact it doesn't extend to the left. Scan one shows the ear with the strikes on the surface, scan two is a close up (left) with another normal '97 ear (right) and the last pic is from Coppercoins showing what DDO #1 should look like...

I think you are looking at the wrong picture. The one on the right is from the Coppercoins website.

I hadn't taken the one above out for a while. It also goes back to the vault tomorrow. At least now I have some pictures to remember it by.
1997 doubled ears are many times in MS / BU condition. Lots a rolls yet out there and it has not been too many passing years for the ones in circ.

Would I be able to pick out a DD earlobe without a magnifying (http://www.bigmagnify.com/)glass? I'm just getting into looking for coin errors and I honestly can't tell the difference with some of these double die errors. I feel like I need a magnifying glass. Any tips?

Some varieties you don't such as the 95. When you look for RPM(Re-punched Mint Marks) you do. Welcome to the Forum. Ask away.

A 10X magnifying loupe will pick up most major varieties. You can get one of those on Ebay for about $15. A stereomicroscope will pick up anything. I would start with a loupe.

I know individuals who are able to see varieties w/o a glass. But for cherry picking I too recommend a 10x glass. That should be sufficient and a 16x glass if you need "get a little closer" look.

I think the coin took some kind of a hit that;s what gives it the appearance of doubling no double die ear
