Hello I found this penny while searching through 1970-S Pennies looking for "small dates" . I sell all of my finds on ebay & was wondering what to call this error . Also I was wondering what a good price would be to start the auction. Thank you

Yes that is machine doubling. Very typical for that year. A good clue is also that the mintmark , shows doubling. As far a value really none, but some people to collect very strong examples of md.Comment

Hello , Thank you for your comments . What I am wondering though is this an error & if so what to call it . I take it you are saying its called a Machine doubling . Also if it is an error what would be a good guess of what its worth - Also the extra numbers are raised off of the surfaceLast edited by Dimenhigh; 09-11-2011, 03:24 PM.Comment

This coin has no extra value. It is not an error in any way. Machine doubling is very common and not worth anythingComment

I just read about the type of error you sugjested & that is deff what it is . Here is the definition though
" In machine doubling, the doubled image results from mechanical issues during the striking of the coin, such as the coin shifting during striking, or the die itself being jarred out of position as a result of vibration or improper coin press maintenance"
This is deff an error but some people dont consider it one . I am 100% sure it will sell on EbayThank you for your comments

Although I totally disagree with the OP's methods on this forum. I find it hard to argue that this is not an error. After all, it was not intended to look like this. And I do agree that people will collect and buy them, after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If it properly described and sold as Machine Doubling, I have no problem with them being sold as such.Comment
