So the capped die strikes the planchet for the first and only time. It then falls off and the now uncapped die strikes the planchet. Is this correct?
what kind of error is this?

Your interpretation is not correct. This coin was only struck once. A clashed cap can stay on the die for many strikes. So you can have a first impression, second impression, third impression, etc.Comment

How is the Memorial not covering the obverse devices? To me it would seem that the capped die struck the planchet leaving an incused impression on it. Then the cap fell of before the die struck the planchet again, leaving a normal impression on the obverse."If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

Its because the devices arent raised to get the clash marks. They are incused into the die. So the clash only hit the field leaving the rest of the design on the die to show after the strike....i think...lolLast edited by kloccwork419; 09-09-2012, 04:43 PM.Comment

Jason, I understand your line of thinking. This is supposedly caused by a cap. I just do not see how the obverse devises would be so pronounced if the were covered with a cap when striking the planchet. Thus is why I was thinking the cap fell off after making an incused Memorial strike, Then striking as normal."If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

The devices arent really that great at all. Better pictures will show this. He said it was a late stage cap . The memorial shows up much better then Lincoln does
Plus you see my avatar?..Who would argue with him?....lololComment

The thin floor of the late-stage die cap conforms to the recesses of the die. These parts of the die cap are protected during a clash. It's only the portion of the cap covering the field portion of the die that picks up the design from the reverse die. The cap then transfers those raised elements to the next planchet in the form of an incuse, mirror-image version (a brockage).Comment

the owner of this coin pm'ed me because he got an offer of $300 for it and asked me if that was fair. i told him i would ask here. if anybody has an opinion on if that would be selling himself short, he, and myself out of pure curiosity, would love to here them. thanks.Comment

I think that $300 is a very generous offer being that it's a circulated coin. It's rather unusual, but not $300 unusual in my own opinion.Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES
