1979 canada cent doubled die or mdd

    Hi all.

I've been away for awhile. I just found this cent. Not sure if its a doubled die or mdd.

I know this is slightly off topic but I cant find any canadian coin sites or error references. Any suggestions?

Any opinion as to MDD or doubled die will also be appreciated.

Holy Maple Syrup Batman, we're in a sticky situation with this one.

That's impressive! I'm kind of thinking die deterioration for a couple reasons. I would expect doubling on the 1 also. The first 9 shows deterioration on the East. The 7 shows it on both sides of the vertical bar (longacre doubling). The second 9 has more doubling on the lower curve than on the upper loop. If I pulled this out of a roll, I would seriously think it was true doubling also.

I could be wrong though...let's see what others say.

That's a very impressive looking coin. I would tend to agree with Lestrrr though. The way the doubling affects multiple areas on the same digit leads me to believe it is die deterioration as well. If it is, it is one of the nicest, and most extreme case I have seen on a Canadian Cent.

Thanks Bob and Lestrrr. Does anybody know if there is a "Canadian Cent Resource' web site where Canadian cent experts hang out?.

Check out this thread from last year- information about this coin and Canadian varieties in general:

Coincidentally, Lestrrr had the first response there, too!

            Very Cool AG,

Close to exactly 1 yr. apart from finding the same coin. This isn't from the 10,000 coins talked about on the other thread is it?

            Nice coin,

The timing is funny, isn't it- must be a summer thing! No, DWK's coin is not from my huge Canadian pile, but it sure looks like one of the two I posted, doesn't it.

Oops, I guess I didn't pay attention to who started the thread and who was commenting. O-well.

Thanks all, for the comments and info, especially you AG.

I guess its not a real DD but I keep anything unusual, anyway they are different and interesting.

Die deterioration doubling caused by the chrome plating on the die eroding. See this example:

I would say it;s die deterioration doubling there is doubling on both sides of the numbers and that;s a good indication for DDD.
