1983 P Lincoln cent- Skinny "Y" on LIBERTY
This struck me as an odd letter at first sight. Was it clogged with grease or what?
This was in an OBW roll I picked up. A couple of things crossed my mind as a possible cause.
-The "Y" was partially filled with grease
-A concave area of the die in this area that caused a weak hubbing, only on this letter
-Die polishing
It took me a few minutes to realize the cause but when I saw the die scratch on the shoulder, it confirmed it for me.
Die scratches in the deeper part of the design told me the coin has been polished pretty aggressively and heavily.
We see distortion sometimes near the rim devices from over polishing. The tops of the letters get "skinny" near the rim, as the polishing abrades the die. The more aggressive the polishing the skinnier the letters get.
Let's hear your thoughts. (Is my brain to clogged with too much saw dust or do you agree?)
