    LWC 1953 D Over D New Variety?

I came across this LWC 1953 D Over D RPM tonight and there is NO Match on CopperCoins or Wexler's site for this D Over D North Variety that I can see. There is a clear split of the top Serif and the area around the top (North) side of the mint mark. I don't believe that PMD would leave a clear distinct "curve" around the top (North) of the mint mark as shown in the photo. I'll try to get a clearer photo of this one posted tomarrow. Any thoughts on this being a new variety?

Hard to tell from the current picture and I know how difficult it can be to get a good shot. If it is truly a full curve to the North, it would be a new one, but I have my doubts for now. Good luck!

Is it possible a worn die could have caused what you are seeing in the north "curve" you see?

Here is the best shot I can get of this mint mark.

There is a clear sharp seperation edge between the two mint marks, so I don't think that it is die deteriation. There also appears to be a line running across the bottom and down the inside of the right side of the main mint mark that could be the inside edges of the first mint mark, but there is some gunk in there too.

This was my thought as well. Notice how your anomaly extends beyond the main D both to the west AND to the east. I think it is too big to be another punched D. Maybe someone will have a different opinion for you. Good luck.

Is it possible to take the same pic, but with the light source from the opposite direction? I don't see anything based on these pics alone.

All I see is the same anomaly on the north side of the date which, to me, suggests light reflecting off an MD or deterioration doubling.

It looks like bob called it - nothing shows of a RPM with lighting from the other direction.
Toss this one in the smelter and back to the hunting!

Don't take it to hert my friend. (I know you don't.) There are more disappointments than pleasent surprises on the road to learning. I experinced them regularly. Keep on trucki'n. As the saying goes. The only thing that beats hunting and fishing is sitting in a chair, wathching your favorite team play, and searching for varieties.
