I stick to the more common bullion unless it's a real bargain and sure it's ok.
We used to buy a lot of gold at shows and went by weight but avoided odd stuff and never got ripped.
There are old fakes that are platinum inside and still weigh correctly but today platinum is similar value but there are some modern tungsten fake bars and coins that weigh correctly and it's not really magnetic so those are tough to spot.
