I have notice the font and size differ from series to series. Is this normal for the 1979 P? The right arm of the "Y" in LIBERTY WAS WHAT GOT MY ATTENTION. I tried to find some decent pics online to check it against but could not get one large enough to see. Thanks for looking, Jon.
Do 1979 P's have a larger font than normal?

The right arm of the Y does look thicker, and the other devices look chunky. Curious to see what the pros think. Since there are no 1979 doubled dies listed (I think there are a couple of 79D RPM's) there is one 1979 DDR listed on doubleddie.com... my guess is maybe early die state and a strong strike. I think the term "strong strike" is not preferred, but I don't know what else to call that. -
Thanks Vivien!! Yeah, I checked VV, CC and Wexler before I posted and found nothing. I have a feeling this is normal for this year and mint though. I've noticed that dies are like vehicles, (running the same style for a time), they would appear to have similar font and size for period and then change. This does not seem to have any consistency though, sometimes a couple of years and then looks to be a decade for others.Comment

Looks normal to me... On your close ups of LIBERTY there appears to be some indications of die flow lines from die wear... Looks to be a later die stage with uneven wear... As the dies wear down the devices can get blotchy looking!!!Jim

BJ Neff did a study of the Lincoln and produced a CD “LINCOLN CENT, MASTER HUBS & MASTER DIES; 1909 TO 2006”. I great CD if you can find one. He looks at each year starting in 1909 to the changes that were made to fonts, digit styles and Lincoln’s bust.
He notes the changes to LIBERTY on pages 35-38 and has images of the changes.
The image of the 1979 LIBERTY is different from the 1974 when major changes were made to 1974sd master hub.Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.Comment

This is a great point to make. Die wear can really affect the devices and should be a primary reason for most extra thickness issues without distortion. Some of the working hubs probably show wear after producing so many working dies, causing some thickening of the devices from one cent to anotherBob Piazza
