    1972 unusual thickness of date

I had a chance to take some quick pics and to post this before heading out the door to another workshop today. I'm hoping to get some comments and feedback on what everyone might think of the 2 in the date. The bottom horizontal part of the 2 appears to be a lot thicker than any of the 2's I remember seeing. Maybe it's normal or something else. The coin is a circulated MDD with nothing out of the ordinary except for the thickness of the 2. Thanks for looking and your comments.

I was thinking maybe it got flattened but it doesn't have that appearance, it is a full strike.
There are no splits in it so maybe in itself it's a double 2 (HUB)? IMO

I think it's a hit on the tail of the 2 as there is one on the top loop as well.

        I'd agree...

I would have to go with a hit.

As far as the theory of it being a hit, yes, there is evidence of the 2 being hit, however, the thickness does not appear to be the result of the hit. The 2 looks to have had the characteristics of being extra thickness prior to the hit. Again, look carefully at the horizontal portion of the two and it is uniform and linear, whereas if the thickness was due to a hit then the metal would obviously show some inconsistencies in the direction of the hit. This does not. The 2 shows even metal flow and precise borders except for the dip in the middle caused by a hit. If the 2 was hit, how could the metal move to creat perfect vertical and horizontal lines?
Anyway, it could very well be a hit, but something else tells me there is more to this story. Thanks everyone for your input.

I would have to agree with everyone's assessment Rock. Even if the coin took a hit, circulation wear can alter the way it looks. It can't be a single digit with extra thickness as other nearby devices would show some extra thickness as well. We know the dates were engraved. so I would rule out anything hub related at this point.
