At first sight I thought PMD...then looking closer I questioned it for the following reasons. No "IN", traces of "TRUST", and trace of "I" in Liberty. Then there is the ?strike through? that makes it look like Abe was shot through the head. The rims on each side are intact.
I have a theory for PMD. Let me know if it makes sense: Someone heated the top portion of the coin and then scraped the area in question with a small eyeglass screwdriver or something like that. If this were true, would the heat vanish the "IN" and weaken the "TRUST" and weaken the "I" in Liberty? The features of his ear/eye are very odd also and would the heat make them look like this? The reason I came to this theory is because of the darkening of the top portion only of the coin. If this isn't PMD, then what is it?
I'd go with a large struck through. IN and TRUST are cleanly gone. The rim is unaffected. Good signs for a struck through.
Thanks. I was looking at Mike Ellis' page and happened to see a "retained strike through" Morgan. Looked a lot like mine so I really think it is a strike through.
I would think a struck through. The rim does look like a little pushed out. I also looks like it was struck off center very little, ( no value) The I looks just to be a greaser.
