What is with 1953 Cents??

As I sorted through my Wheat stash, I stumbled upon, no that's wrong, It JUMPED out at me, there was a 1953 silver colored with a outer ring around it and damage (on the ring not the coin) where a chain loop I'd imagine was attached. Well I hit Google and found bunches of references to this date - 1953 being silver, Plated/colored/dipped etc etc.... But when I put in other dates - not so much.... Any one know why? 1953 -- ten years after the steel/zinc penny??

I've seen them in those simple bezels and plated. It does seem like a lot were from 53 but I've seen other dates.
Maybe some outfit made a bunch at that time.
