    1909 VDB DDO Type 2???

    John Wilkes PhotoBooth here again.

I came across this one this morning. The type 2 DDO is very NOT impressive IMO however I can see very minor doubling in the superior examples I have. This PCGS MS64BN yeah 64.. I think they screwed up... exhibits nearly the same characteristics as the other DDO - 002 that I have but not as much fattening of the numbers in the date.

The whole coin can be seen here: http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...se14080631.jpg

What do y'all think of these indicators?

These are the same indicators from 2 certified DDO-002 that I have.

It's not it. The doubling isn't there. Kinda funny how the chips in the B and R are present, however. What a coincidence!

Its getting to be kinda common seeing this. The first coin isnt the DDO as Wendell said. I dont know how it occurs but I know that there are 1909s with all the markers but not the doubling, I have one myself.

Agreed. The die chips are similar, but not exact. I have attributed about a dozen of the DDOs over the years, and have also returned about 4 of the similar type, but not the DDO. The first indication for a doubled die should always be the doubling itself...not the markers.

rlarick...You seem a little perplexed about the similarities, but as I stated in my post above, the die chips are similar, but not exact. to that of the doubled die. A good comparison would be 1957D where there were many, many different dies with chips in the 9, the B of LIBERTY or both. It does happen. You have to get by the fact that they are similar and concentrate on the fact that in order to be from the same die, the markers have to be exact. You also have to consider that as the die progressively strikes more coins, the markers may change (IE cracks get larger, chips bigger etc)

It's not only the 9 that is doubled on the true variety. There is doubling on LIBERTY as well, for instance. It can be somewhat hard to see the doubling, and indeed I'm surprised they put it in the Cherrypickers' Guide. As Bob says, the chips are not exact, just similar. Chips in multiple dies often represents a weak area in the design. This area of stress will chip more often, like the weak spots on the 1957 coins Bob talks about.

I have three. I can also add that there have been a number of SIMILAR coins posted the last few years that were just plain weird, chips and clash marks, that were not DDO-002. As stated, look for the doubling - not the markers...
